Plus Size Designer Fashions

ruffle blouse

Yes, plus size designer fashions do exist, which you’ll be relieved to hear if you’re a larger sized woman.  No longer will you have to spend your days dressed in a tent dress because that’s the only thing you can find in your size.  Plus size designer fashions abound online and here are just a few that you can easily buy with a click of your mouse.

Bradley Bayou, award winning designer, has larger sizes in many of his creations.  Jackets in patent snake print, lamb leather, suede or naked leather up to size 3X (26-28) in a variety of colours.  Sexy blouses in chiffon and slinky polyester and spandex provide the perfect fit and are also available up to size 3X as are skirts in suede and denim as well as a selection of trendy jeans.

Lilly & Van offers shirts, tops, trousers, crop trousers, skirts and dresses up to size 3X in a variety of funky colours, both plain and patterned.

Dennis Basso, renowned for his use of gorgeous materials and trimmings offers a sophisticated ready to wear line of dresses and separates up to size 3X.  Why not treat yourself to a faux fur leopard print walking coat or a bonded satin jacket with bead detail.  Proof, if proof were needed that plus size designer fashions don’t have to be boring or frumpy.

Former fashion reality show winner, Chloe Dao, uses pretty detailing and trim to enliven her contemporary collection of sweaters, cardigans, blouses and tops.  Jeans, leggings, slim pants and skirts in dark colours for that slimming look, complete the ensemble, while dresses are simple and understated.

However, of the designers I looked at, it’s Pamela Dennis who offers the largest collection of plus size designer fashions.  This collection seems to be prettier and more feminine than some of the others and contains a large range of colours and fabrics including a smocked ruffle top in gorgeous carnation red or a silky-look top in fabulous blackberry with a smocked neckline and raw edge flower decoration.  Sweaters and cardigans have decorative touches including beading and detail in ribbon and lace.

These are just a few of the many designers who obviously believe that size is no barrier to being fashionable and who include something for every woman in their collections.  There are many more including Bob Mackie, Erica Davies, Janie Bryant, Lori Goldstein and Louis Dell’Olio to name but a few.

Autumn/Winter 2011/12 Womenswear Collections at London Fashion Week

ruffle blouse

Frumpy to Funky’s London based Personal Stylist, Karen Grace, comments on London Fashion Week for Autumn/Winter 2011.

The first day of London Fashion Week and an early start to see the first catwalk show in the big tent at Somerset House.

Costelloe really does have a large family! Last season we saw his 6 sons taking to the catwalk, this time it was his daughter, Jessica’s turn. She opened the show in a short burgundy tweed coat with oversized collar and closed in a cute metallic burgundy baby doll dress.

The rest of the models wore rustic red blunt cut frizzy wigs which complemented the bright bold colours of the collection’s palette.

The inspiration for the collection was ‘Home Grown Fashion’ using fabrics of tweeds, plaids, and herringbones. These traditional fabrics had been given a face lift with mini skater skirts, short tailored swing jackets and coats, plus the bold splashes of peacock blue, emerald, mustard, burnt orange and fuchsia. Not to be outshone, collars and buttons were large making a statement.

Metallics, plain and patterned, gave retro glamour to the structured dresses rather than the usual sci -fi it’s associated with.

Next show venue was at the plush Savoy hotel.

Whilst Costelloe’s AW11 girl is bright and vivacious, Grachvogel’s AW11 woman is languidly graceful. The sumptuous setting of the Lancaster ballroom with its crystal chandeliers added to the elegance.

The style palette was muted shades of ebony, bone, grey and blush with a shot of flame orange to show there is heat underneath the Grachvogel woman’s cool exterior. Inspiration came from the tribal to the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. This was shown in the exclusive artwork prints as enchanted forests in the fairy print, but instead of the natural browns and greens, the colour shows the fairy tales’ dark side in steel grey mixed with buttermilk, winter white and muted jewel shades of amethyst and sapphire.   Several catsuits and dresses sported a modern twist with a racer style back softened by the fluidity of the fabrics.

Statement pieces included the bone wool flannel full length ‘Emperor’ coat with oversized shearling collar, and the ‘Aesop’ skirt with its asymmetrical hemline graduating longer at the back, in black lace, bone wool flannel and the tribal Shamen wool print.

The look was fluid and cleanly cut with the fabrics bringing rich textures such as silk, georgette, lace and cashmere tweed.

With no time to muse over the collection, again a mad rush to get to my next destination, this time to the On/Off location in Covent Garden.

From the floaty pastel hues of their Indian inspired SS11 collection, designer duo Jenny Holmes and Dimitris Theocharidis go dark and grungy in their AW11 collection looking towards Norse mythology for their inspiration. Titled ‘Valkyre’ after those celestial females who decide who will die in the field of battle, the models wore their long tousled  hair with just the front strands tied back to reveal the black war paint worn as a mask around their eyes. Touches of leather appear as plaited braids and patches on some of the garments giving the illusion these warrior women have been busy making their own clothes in the traditional Viking way. This more so on the high heeled shoes covered in curled edged patches of brown leather.  However these warriors had the luxury fabrics on hand with cashmere sweats, silk modal jerseys and sand washed silk satins with touches of soft baby alpaca wool hand knits. It’s all about layers and loosely woven oversized knits, with the main colour palette being sombre hues of black and charcoal grey, lightened with the natural neutral shades of ecru. Denim reappears from last season but this time ranging from a pale treated washed look to the darker blacks and greys, with light jersey semi ruched leggings in denim look prints.

Key pieces were, the brown and black silk dress made of shorts with a long billowing trail and leather patchwork tight sleeves; and the oversized faded black padded coat with exaggerated shoulders but fitting snugly around the knees.

Next mad dash was to the Freemason’s Hall for the first of the Vauxhall Fashion Scout‘s catwalk show:

Titled ‘Artist Wonderment’, designer Jeff Garner was inspired by the fashionable French court of Louis XV where frivolity reigned and egos were high, but turns this pretension around to appreciate the wonderment of an artist.  Prophetik is an ethical range so the fabrics used are eco-friendly such as hemp and organic velour. He’s introduced two new fabrics this season: the cactus silk made from the agave plant and his own great grandmother’s 100year old southern quilts! The quilts are a patchwork of colours, but the main colour palette of the collection was neutrals, white, black and the splashing of rich hues (well it is Louis XV inspired) in emerald, plum, violet, deep scarlet and burgundy.

One of his key pieces was of course the finale dress called ‘Mrs Moulton’ made of hand sewn white ostrich feathers on white silk and silk organza. Why it is called this I don’t know, maybe because the ostrich naturally moults its feathers twice a year? Or it could be Jeff’s old next door neighbour.

Whatever the reason, the feathers gave an otherwise simple gown a touch of grace and playful frothiness.

Another key piece was called ‘Lola’ named after his great grandmother. Here Lola’s old quilt was given a new lease of life as a corset panel and quilted hood. Teamed with wool jodhpurs (considerately lined in linen) which were embellished with reclaimed gold piping and antique gold buttons.

The men were striking in military style jackets, jodhpurs and short velvet baggy breeches, although it probably is not a look you could pull off in everyday life. The quilts came in to their own here as a cosy pink and blue coat with large frilled collar, it wasn’t the case as wherever I lay my hat is my home, rather wherever I lay my coat is my bed –now that’s recycling at its best .

Wishing I could lay on one of Grandma Garner’s cosy quilts, it wasn’t to be as Somerset House called to me for the next catwalk show:

Titled ‘A Winter’s Melodie’, this collection’s inspiration was drawn from two different periods – the Elizabethan period and the 1940-50′s French Haute Couture. The colour palette was the deep rich colours of amethyst, burgundy, gunmetal grey, purples, navy with pale gold.

Blanket like wraps were layered over skirts and trousers or draped asymmetrically over wool day dresses and blouses, giving a Celtic feel.  The knee length pencil skirts and dresses were more inspired by the haute couture with their clean lines skimming over the female form.  Then the real drama appeared in the guise of a Sir Walter Raleigh style puff ball cape in silk metallic green, a pale gold silk gown with semi hooped skirt and flat stiff bodice with the finale dress looking regal with its oversized puffed ruff collar and long train.

And just to make sure my legs were still working,  it was time to make a dash back to the On/Off venue for my last but not least show of the day.

Taking Christina G Rossetti’s poem ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ for inspiration, ‘The Enchanted Forest’ is a darker continuation of Isham’s earlier floral theme ‘East of Eden’ in SS11 collection. Here the models represent fairies in lush tones of magenta, emerald, deep sapphire, crimson, coral and granite whilst the Queen of Fairy looks dark and mysterious in granite voile and silver sequins.

The headgear ranged from the simple floral arrangement you’d expect fairies to wear, to those with more of a touch of the orient – proving fairies are well travelled. And of course the Fairy queen’s headdress was bigger and better than the rest – like a bridal veil on a windswept day catching   flowers as they flew by

Opening the show are the fairies, sorry models, in striking bold floral patterns on a background of forest green and turquoise blue velvet. Then came the elegant long draped jersey dresses in plain deep sapphire and crimson, followed by green and yellow pattern chiffons which brought a light airy freshness before going back to deep block colours, this time the turn of emerald.

By the end of the collection the colours were darker with the granite and silver shining like different strengths of moonlight on metallic bark textured browns, silver birch jacquards and scale-like sequins, whilst black beaded and woollen lace appliqués entwined around the dresses and jackets representing creepers.

After a full first day, the second day started miserably with queuing outside in the rain and cold for my first show at the Northumberland hotel.

Once inside and quickly thawing, the show began with a shocking pink futuristic mini dress, worn with matching tights and shoes (designed by Guiseppe Zanotti) to make sure we were all paying attention.  This set the scene for a blaze of all over eye popping colours in reds, oranges, pinks and a slightly more subdued electric blue.  Not the usual autumnal colours here. Our eyes were sometimes given a rest with the solid classic navy and blacks.

Wide zips were exposed and the main attraction were the half peplums giving volume to the pieces.  These ranged from the more traditional short peplum in the same fabrics as shown on a double breasted orange trench coat with tulip style skirt, to the oversized shiny black bow style on an orange diaphanous lace maxi dress. The ones which dragged you in were those resembling an open Venus fly trap with feathers at the tips instead of the Venus’ jagged teeth.

Mainly block colours the pattern when it did appear was of a tartan style, and surprisingly subtle being made up various hues of the same colour.

Fabrics used were leather lace, silk velvet, jersey, lace and not forgetting the ostrich feathers made in to jaw dropping shocking pink and orange mini dresses.

Back to sprinting, my last two shows were at Vauxhall Fashion Scout’s Freemason Hall venue.

Posing on pedestals were two buff guys in what looked like nappies – but on closer inspection (any excuse hey?) the fabric was tulle and inspired by Robert Mapplethorpe’s photograph ‘White Gauze’

Titled ‘Martyr’, the collection was quite eclectic in styles and fabrics. Ranging from the fairly innocuous looking grainy denim pieces with the raw cut skirt lengths graduating longer at the back to the darker diaphanous black drapes and eerie black tulle headpieces wrapped tightly round the models’ heads. Looking like something out of a horror movie were two models dressed all in white with splashes of blood red, one over her bare arm whilst the other’s head and shoulders were covered and stained the top of her pure satin dress. More subdued were the sharp tailored  black wool crepe panelled dresses  and skirts adorned with a trail of long ribbon ties teamed with tights and body stockings in barbed wire and thorn prints bringing a tattoo effect.

Thorny black and white prints also covered a billowing maxi dress and fluid minis again with the graduating hemline.

Just glad it wasn’t my final show of the evening or I may have suffered from nightmares.

Ending the day on a lighter note was Bukio’s collection titled ‘Choxa’ taking inspiration from the Georgian (her home country) National Ballet men’s costume of the same name.

Bukio emulates the Choxa long jacket’s cinched in waist and full skirt style on to some of her dresses although she still keeps her much loved floaty chiffon styles. To decorate a traditional choxa, lots of ammunition is used one being a row of bullet tube pockets across the chest. Bukio reduces the row and adds to feminine diaphanous blouses which are balanced out with strips of leather on collars or shoulders.  One of her key pieces: was a black jumpsuit with leather shorts and chiffon top embellished with the bullet tube pockets.

She takes the bullet on other pieces a step further by adding to the side of waists, as belts and trimming the tops of her knee length boots. These boots were a great addition to her signature shoe collection with their cut out leather side pieces

The traditional coax colours of black, white, grey and wine red were used given a clean palette. However she mixed it up with the more autumnal shades of dark and mid tone browns, camels, rose beige and a few pale pastels which she used for her chiffons to bring a more feminine feel to the darker masculine leathers and bullets. .

Her signature chunky triangular heels, both in plain and in two tone colours, were nearly upstaged by the chunky 4 bullet leather heel, but I think that style was only for this season – a pity as they were stunning.

Day three was an easy day as the first show wasn’t until after lunch.

Carlotta is passionate about ethical issues and delivers her message through her designs. The inspiration for this collection was formed from cruelty against animals especially the slaughter of seals for their fur.  Main colour palette was striking with white representing the ice and snow, navy blue for the cold sea, and splashes of red for the spilt blood. Faux fur represented the actual seals. The large square shoulders and the geometric patterns used were taken from the Inuit’s traditional clothes.  Her usual signature bodysuit was replaced with transparent leggings and body stockings in the geometric designs. These looked equally stunning under the full skirted dresses and their red netting, but came in to their own when seen under long diaphanous fine wool tops. The models with their white faces and windswept hair looked as though they’d just arrived from the Arctic with flakes of snow still on their feathery eyelashes.

No  rushing around as my next show wasn’t until the evening at the Charing Cross hotel.

The title of Omar’s evening gowns collection was ‘Paradise Lost’ and he took his inspiration from John Milton’s epic poem of the same name, in which Adam and Eve’s temptation by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden is described.

The colour palette was a range of purple shades from the palest greyish purple to deeper but muted hues; and a range of muted greens from the mustard greens to olives. The purples represent flowers whilst the shades of green suggest the leaves in the Garden of Eden.

The opening gown shone with its metallic gold panels emblazoned on the folded chiffon bodice like the rays of the sun. A short cocktail dress seemed to represent the happy days in the garden with its shiny satin silk in top pleated in shades of fresh lime greens and its floaty chiffon skirt dancing with its embellished flowers.  Layers of chiffon fall like delicate shreds to form the skirt of a satin silk ruched cocktail dress in light aniseed green, whilst a long simple lilac gown in satin silk was given texture with a crisscross patterned bodice.

Delicate woven lace flowers, layers of sheer fabrics, asymmetrical hemlines, and dramatic necklines symbolise the story of sin, angels, curiosity and beauty.

Again, Day four wasn’t a bad day as all my shows were at the Freemasons Hall so no running around yay!

From the title of the collection ‘Utopian Aviary’ I was expecting  feathers or bird prints, but instead I was pleasantly surprised with sharp tailoring and fabrics made to emulate the bird form and shape by layering, ruffling, pinking and gathering of fabrics.

The opening model wore matching cape and pencil skirt made from short faux fur in ridged lines of black and white. The cape was not of the usual free flowing style but tightly fitted across the shoulders and formed a tail coat at the back; the pencil skirt was made up of layers opening across the front like the layering of feathers. Necklines were high with either long thin feather like bows pointing upwards as in flight, or multi layered voluminous collars circling the throat as a bird would puff out its plumage to attract a mate.  Plain body skimming shift dresses are given texture from shoulder to the throat with high gathered necklines pulled in as you would a cloth bag, whilst the shoulders of jackets are puffed out with extra overlapping layers like feathers..

Colour palette was a base of black with the more mate attracting rich tones of oranges, reds and greens. Fabrics of faux fur, gossamer silks, taffeta, velvet and chiffons gave texture.

This show started as it meant to go on with a blaze of colour. The first model wore a 50′s style full skirted dress not only standing out with the abundance of black underskirt netting but the silk skirt hemline was stiffened with curled wiring. The top of the dress was a Kaleidoscope of colours and patterns (also the title of the collection) and to balance out the top with the voluminous skirt, the square folded shoulders were sculpted to stand to attention.

The models wore large diamante Perspex wrap around glasses  as though they needed to protect their eyes from any bright colours shooting out from the garments – well her inspiration was that of the scientific and philosophic discoveries of light reflecting off a glass prism, supernovas, mirages and comets.

Colours were bright with ultra violet shades of pink, orange, green and blues. Patterns played a key role with the geometric shapes of the kaleidoscope patterns to the more blurred edges of a mirage or rainbow.

The styles were an eclectic mix from those voluminous netted skirts in printed silks to the knee length pencil skirt in sci-fi silver metallic leather. For me it was a mixed reaction, I wasn’t keen on the futuristic metallic dress, but loved the long georgette and sequined evening gown with its side cut outs and sheer panels. Wearing that I could happily study how the light shimmers off the sequins.

The last day of London Fashion Week and the first show of the day was back in the big tent at Somerset House.

Inspired by Austrian architect Loos’s essay ‘Ornament and Crime’ where a cobbler is toiling to brogue his shoes, Schwab uses this broguing pattern of punched holes to decorate his leather pieces. But it is in his softer fabrics where the brogue pattern excels.  Here he takes porcelain Swarovski pearls, designs them in to clusters and lines to create the effect of raised brogue patterns.

Silhouettes were clean; the brogue lines contoured breasts giving a warrior princess look especially in the leather, whilst other leather pieces were softened by mixing with chiffon and waists wear cinched in.

As well as the blacks and browns, the colour palette included rich tones of teal, mustard, orange and burgundy – all the hues you expect for the autumn.

Next stop was to the Freemasons Hall for my next show. No shoving and pushing here as everyone was allocated seats and yours truly was on the front row.

This collection titled ‘Les Guerriers’ (or warriors) was the inaugural collaboration of Irish designer Joanne Hynes and artist Helen Steele. They took their inspiration from the Irish pirate queen, Grace O’Malley, which emulsifies their own mission to create, battle on and forge ahead.

This was an array of colours and textures.  Leather jackets, hand knitted Arans and Irish tweeds were encrusted with sparkling crystals. The models wore oversized and heavily embellished neck pieces made from hand woven silk, nappa leather and Waterford crystals in reference to the Irish heritage. These glammed up the simpler garments often set on faux fur stoles, but also added extra glam to the prints and already embellished pieces.   Tweed suits were a patchwork of rich colourful fabrics horizontally panelled with Indian brocades, feathers and crystals.

Aran cardigans  were made in to short jumpsuits, faux fur coats had fun splashes of colours as though dotted on with a paint brush , leather  skirts were painted over by Steele using dense layers of multicoloured paint and Steele’s series of paintings had been digitally printed on to silk jersey leggings, dresses, scarves and tees.

Footwear was either high wedged wooden clogs, chunky very high platform wedged boots or the flat Chelsea boot.  The clogs were covered in splashes of paint as though worn by an artist whilst painting; the Chelsea boots were a patchwork of different fabrics and colours, and the high wedged bovver boots were in bright shiny patent.

Definitely a collection fit for a Warrior Queen.

And inspired by the warrior queen look, I was ready to battle my way home through the rush hour.

London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Winter is nearly upon us so our thoughts turn to spring/summer as LFW SS11 begins. Even the weather warmed to the event as it went from crisp chilly days to end with blazing hot sunshine.

Early on Day one and opening the show at the BFC marquee catwalk was Paul Costelloe. Still sleepy, frantic shouting backstage put a smile on our bleary eyed faces.

PAUL COSTELLOE

Titled ‘A Long Day’s Night’, the collection is girly and described as ‘Tinkerbell turned party girl’. Cropped biker jackets are thrown in to give a harder edge but are softened with the use of lighter colours and soft sheen fabrics.

Skirt lengths go to the extremes – either short or maxis. The short skirts are fun and flirty whilst the maxis are elegant and ethereal – one a sensual diaphanous fabric with modesty only prevailing through the pale pink and blue zigzag wave pattern.

Colours are sugar pink, mint green, silver, pearl, greys and navy. The pinks formed abstract checks with navy and white, lightly spice up graphic patterns with pale apricot, zigzagged with pale blue in waves and graduated alone from light to a bolder hue. The mint green was refreshing in a shiny jacquard fabric.

Textures come in metallic weaves and twill, patterns in abstract checks and graphics. Large bows don the back of low backlines.

The short skirts swirled in skater style, cocooned legs in tulip and puff ball shapes and looked art deco in a dropped waist pleated style. The more interesting were the silver embossed puff ball dress tied at the bottom to form the shape of a large bow and the jacquard mint green dress looking futuristic with its stiff 3 tiered skirt.

To keep the smile on our faces, we were treated to Costelloe’s six sons strutting down the catwalk (albeit nervously) suited and booted.

BUNMI KOKO

Kicking off the Vauxhall Fashion Scout at Freemasons Hall Covent Garden was Bunmi Koko. To celebrate the start of the show a lone Ekpe man danced in a bright red and yellow masquerade costume looking very much like a large pom pom.  It was hard to visualise the collection usurping this, but amazingly it did.

Hear we saw no pretty summer pastels or girlie styles. Colours were bold monochrome, bright reds and burnt ochre. Prints are Ekpe, leopard and tie dye designed to create fiery flames. The style epitomises the confident feminine woman who knows what she wants and aims to get it.  Titled ‘Matriarchy’ the collection celebrates female empowerment whilst fusing cultures of Nigeria and the UK. This is power dressing with a wild twist – sharp tailoring, enhanced waists, and strong shoulders embellished with pom poms, beads and fringing. An eclectic mixture of fabrics and patterns are used together such as tweeds, organza and silk – all accessorised with ornate feathered masks.

CAROLINE CHARLES

There was a mixed reaction to this sleek ladylike lux inspired collection as you instantly thought ‘mother of the bride’ due to the lengths of the skirts which are either on the knee or just below, plus the accessories of hats, long gloves and kitten heels .

For day wear there are sleeveless dresses in brightly coloured 50′s print floral silk, polka dots and animal prints. Suits have full or pencil skirts and boxy jackets in white, black and yellow. All cinched in with skinny leather belts of various colours.  Black Capri pants and leggings give a more youthful feel worn with tunic shirts in a monochrome check and a leopard print. Although not sure on the skull caps which looked suspiciously like rubber swimming hats.

For the evening, dress shapes vary from the shift dress to the full volume skirt. Colours are of soft golds, pearls, reds and black. LBDs are accessorised with diamond and pearls. Lots of sequins and beads.

This collection probably wouldn’t appeal to the younger woman but then again it is right on track for Ascot, Goodwood and Henley’s where fashion rules are not to be broken if you want to get in.

JENA .THEO

The designer duo’s (Jenny Holmes and Dimitris Theocharidis) collection titled ‘Bandoliers’ is inspired by the spirit of India with a touch of 19th Century Victorian British colonialism.

Silk turbans adorned the models’ heads, handcrafted Indian trim embellished flowing fabrics and skinny pants whilst fabric versions of the bandoliers feature as low slung belts, cuffs, necklines and garters.

Denim creates contrasting structure in shorts, jackets and dresses. Colours are either block pastel hues of iris blue and dusty violet pink or raw ecru. The raw ecru splashed with hand painted colour was inspired by the Holi festival when coloured pigment and herbs are thrown in a joyful celebration.

Stiletto platform shoes were adorned with raw painted gold leaf, as was the model’s arms, ankles, stomachs and even one nipple.

The Victorian influence came in the disguise of a corseted iris blue mini dress with soft side bustle and a mini dress version of the cage crinoline.

Day 2 and another early morning start on a chilly day. This time at the Off schedule location of the edgier Old Sorting Office’s industrial hall in new Oxford Street

BERNARD CHANDRAN

Titled ‘A Modern Romance’  Chandran keeps pastel hues to a minimum preferring the richer tones of golds, greens, silver and black.  His clean rectangular silhouettes are given texture through the use of a Malay technique called kerrawang, to create linear prints. Silk organza sleeveless tunic dresses show a military feel with oversized floating flap pockets and boxed sleeves, whilst the prints reflect the Malaysian rainforest.

Metallics bring fluidity and a sci-fi feel with liquid silver pieces and as multicoloured panels on dresses. Here we still see the floating pockets and the boxed sleeves become more exaggerated. New fabrics used are lurex silk and patent leather.

Evening wear in the guise of embellished structured lapels, one with an extremely low neckline which kept falling off the models shoulder, with the last outfit resembling the 1920′s with its long straight camel maxi and ostrich feathers capelet.

Unfortunately for one model the winged styled shoes with their high and extremely thin killer heels almost made her crash land.

CRAIG LAWRENCE

‘Siren Mermaids’ inspired by Sirens of Greek mythology and the fantasy world of mermaids. Using cutting edge materials such as Japanese Kyototex metallic yarns in his knitwear techniques, Lawrence enables the garments to glisten as if wet.  Colours are peacock green, silver and white. Long tube maxi dresses cling to the models like mermaid tails with the two toned greens and silver creating the illusion of fish scales. The garments are also turned inside out to show web like textures and chain mail detailing which adds to the illusion. A white strapless tube maxi is adorned with loose long yarns like floating seaweed, whilst an empire line maxi is covered with feather-like yarns to represent sea foam.  Very mystical.

LAKO BUKIA

Next stop was Freemason’s Hall to catch Lako Bukia’s show. Titled ‘Surati’, the collection has been dedicated to Georgian culture and religion, Bukia’s native country. Colour palette of soft blues, pinks, greys and natural tones were taken from the Georgian buildings although red, midnight blue and black were also included. And strong shoulders souring out and upwards representing the silhouettes.

Light fabrics of silk satin, crepe and cotton contrasted well with the angular structured shoulders. Whilst a top layer of organza, georgette and chiffon are used to create the illusion of looking outwards through the curtains of windows. Dress shapes keep the buildings rectangular silhouette by either falling straight from the neckline or with drop waists. Whilst rows of windows are represented through the placement of strips of fabric crossing over each other, and the cutaway necklines.

The models wore shoes designed by Bukia with what is becoming to be her signature heel – chunky and triangular.

OSMAN

Back in the big tent at Somerset House, Osman proved to be in demand with some unlucky ticket holders being turned away.

Staple colours are tans, beiges and navy with a refreshing splash of honeysuckle pink, zingy yellow, and apple green.

Woven and soft patent leathers come in creamy beige sculpted shorts, swing skirts, and bandeau tunics. Cotton blended ottomans appear as crisp summer white dresses; lightweight gossamer silks come to life in the vivid hues and the organic dark blue denim brings an edge to sculpted tailored dresses

Hemlines bring interest to the minimalist tailoring with asymmetry, softly folded tiers, extremely long tail coats and attached coloured drapes of longer length.

Evening and just time enough to squeeze in another catwalk show before the Phrophetik after show party. This time the location was the Charing Cross hotel and the show called ‘A la Mode’ was organised by La Genève North events. A LA MODE is a one stop destination to snap up and discover some of the best independent international designers.

OMAR MANSOOR‘s collection is named after Terence Rattigan’s ‘After the Dance’ – a play whose central characters have spent years in a round of endless hedonism in the 20s. Mansoor’s designs reflect the glamour of this era with embellishments of Swarovskis and thread work on draped chiffons and silks in silver grey, dusty pink, wine and midnight blue. The long gowns ooze elegance and sophistication, whilst the knee length floaty cocktail dresses have a flirtier look allowing you to dance the night away.

VALERY KOVALSKA’s collection ‘Professional Suicide’ includes both mens and womenswear and has a contemporary punk rock edge.  Various shades of blues with a striking design of white lightening. Weave designs on shirts and waistcoats add texture and loving the men’s kilt style coat.

BELINDA LIU’s ‘Marquis de Sade’ collection takes its inspiration from the French aristocrat’s libertine lifestyle and the fashion of his era. Here we see the modern version of the full bloomers over mini puffed skirts, corset style bodices, matching cuff bracelets and romantic lace hooded capelets. More wearable pieces include the tailored knee length dresses with matching capelets.

ZED-EYE . An eclectic mix of patterns and textures. Feathers adorn shoulders and waists, ruffles necklines and peplums, and a mesh of pearl beads around the neck. Floral patterned pencil skirt is matched with a striped blouse. Not all pieces are busy, such as the elegant jumpsuits in bold block colours of pink and blue with a touch of patterned trim.

MALAM’s ‘Lost Dolls’ collection is cute with a little edge – an assortment of lace, cotton, linen and silk.  Black lace dress is adorned with a 2 tone metallic pink cowl neck collar and fingerless gloves, and there’s a pantomime feel with principal boy style waist coats worn over girlie lace trimmed dresses and fairy wizard type pointed hoods.

KATE WILLIAMS’s otherwise colour palette of black and white sees touches of tans, aquas and yellows in digital prints. The collection is a capsule wardrobe ranging from the black and white striped bikinis for the beach, tufted tasselled high waist shorts, jacquard trousers, white full skirted day dress, and digital printed jersey dresses to the floor length pearl satin evening dress.

Day 3 and back to Somerset House

BASSO AND BROOKE

The designer duo’s, Bruno Basso & Christopher Brooke, collection is where’ bleeding edge techno-fusion meets dusty hand scribbled antiquity’.

Digital prints of handwritten notes by Da Vinci, Tolstoy, Balzac and others mix with vintage florals and topography.  Prints of suede, tweed and leather add digital texture to the smoother silks, cotton and gabardine.

Prim and proper necklines juxtapose with short flirty skirt lengths – long sleeved shirts buttoned to the top were worn with short swing skater skirts and mini shift dresses wore their necklines high.

Black and white multi tonal graduating stripes look striking as peg leg pants and capes. The neutral colour palette of earthy tones and pale dusty pastels is giving a jolt with electric blues and bright oranges joining the prints either as panels or the main piece.

ANN-SOFIE BACK ATELJE

After rushing to get to the Portico Rooms we then could relax and enjoy the slower paced salon show of Ann-Sofie Back.  The theme for the collection is porn and the sexualisation of society.

Not being at all seedy the colour palette is sophisticated black and white.  The look is simplistic with added twists: One fascinating white dress has the appearance of being damp and clung to the model’s body. Detailing is seen as twisted plexi bras worn over simple tops, large silver rings framing cutaway circles on backs and tear drop jewellery weights securing the drape fabrics.

CHARLIE LE MINDU

It was a touch of the Emperor’s New Clothes – did the models realise they were naked bar pink platform boots, wig and a hat?   Apparently the effect was to focus on the wig and the hat – not sure it worked. I think part of the audience either concentrated on the boots with down cast eyes and the rest didn’t look up as far as the models head.

Not all the models were naked; most were decently covered in leopard prints or yeti like fur.

See it didn’t work, I haven’t once commented on the wigs.

Day 4 and at last, time to look around the exhibition. Here are some highlights:

TAMARA FOGLE

Tamara Fogle makes bags out of antique textile such as German flour sacks, Hungarian grain sacks, military tents, sailcloth, Welsh blankets and French mattress ticking. The German flour sacks (date range 1830-1940′s) are trimmed in chocolate brown Italian leather. The writing which is different on every sack (and so makes each bag unique) states the farmer’s name.

This season new colours of oranges and teals give a contemporary twist.

LEJU JEWELLERY

Leju use a special Amazonian seed known as vegetable ivory as a sustainable alternative to elephant ivory. Rich colours are created by staining and dying the seed with natural plant extract and oils. Their new collection brings together intense colours and bold structure threaded together using leather, hemp, wax thread, stainless steel and copper wire. Great to adorn your plain LBDs.

FINSK

Titled ‘Adagio’ this new collection is inspired by ballet training and slow movement is represented by the shape of the shoe or fold of leather. Tones are muted in mint greens, greys and flesh pinks with brighter shades of yellow, lilac and black in small details capturing the dancer’s movement. Her wooden wedges are HIGH with an almost rocking chair construction.

LA PERLA

La Perla collaborates with Jean Paul Gautier and brings out his signature cone bra cups and corseted waists. Colours are orange red, black and nude.

PIERS ATKINSON

Atkinson’s hats are whacky as ever with this season the story floating between Adam & Eve, Sleeping Beauty and the Green Man. Main colour palette is green (obviously) ranging from apple to moss, creams, gold and pale pinks to fuchsias. Designs are berets in suede or leather, straw mini-fezzes and silk florals creations.

Back on the catwalk shows, this time at Vauxhall Fashion Scouts’ Freemason’s Hall

ROMEO PIRES

This mens and womenswear collection has a circus clown feel to it with long broad braces holding up very low slung baggy trousers and skirts with wide loose waist bands. Main colour palette is crisp white and stone with touches of black and splashes of terracotta. Layering is key and prints of large skull are bold and dramatic.

Day 5 and the sun is shining and I’m back at the big tent in Somerset House.

JAEGER

Inspiration for graphic simplicity and geometric lines is drawn from abstract artist Robyn Denny’s clean colour blocked panels and the fresh sporty undertone from post-minimalist sculpture Rachel Whiteread.

Monochrome blazers and waistcoats have displaced lapels in contrasting shade to form sculptural shapes, simple tunic leather dresses and skirts are perforated and hemlines curved. 60′s style dresses continue the geometric lines and monochrome look.

Softer lines and colours are brought in through nude and buttermilk suede and loosely woven macramé sweaters and maxi dress.

Vibrant colours also appear in abundance with marine blue, spearmint, emerald, gold, raspberry and navy.  And photographic print of large peonies in raspberry and monochrome bring a light feminine touch on silk gazar and organza shift dresses, tunic tops and skirts

ANTIPODIUM

The weather was definitely getting in to the swing of LFW as the sun shone through the Portico Room windows for Antipodium’s ‘Hothouse ‘collection. This mens and womens wear collection is inspired by the Barbican hothouse and what could happen if revellers succumbed to their natural urges at a refined soiree.

Prints are oversized entwined limbs in greens and greys on shirts and shirt dresses, dense foliage in mulberry and green, plus moths on sky blue blouses and mini flared skirts and dresses.

Skirt length varies from the flirty mini to the elegant 40′s mid calf length of the waffle knitted body con dress and stretch denim pencil skirts.

Brown washed linen shorts with a frayed hem look tailored teamed with waffled knit jumper and sky blue moth blouse, and the soft nylon raincoat in chartreuse gives the illusion of wet grass whilst the diaphanous chartreuse dress underneath reflects hot humidity.

Other main colour is dusty pale pink in a skinny leg pant suit and floor length diaphanous dress.

KRYSTOF STROZYNA

Lots of lace as high waist wide legged pants, maxi skirts and short dresses, but also as panelling in body con short dresses and lace fitted leg warmers.  Main colour palette is muted beige with accents of neon violet, mint green and fuchsia pink in chiffon drapes, panelling, animal and tropical flower prints.

Day 6, move over girls, it’s now the boys’ turn

CHRISTOPHER SHANNON

Titled ‘Never Get to Go Anywhere’ this refers to the wanderlust of trips Shannon is yet to take.

The colours of the collection are light with lots of crisp optic white, pale sand and powder colours of lemon, pink and blue. Camouflage prints are pale blues, greys, black and white. Coloured panels are the look for shirts, shorts, trousers whilst nylon anoraks don coloured pockets. Rag tufting and mesh give texture to tops, shorts and hats.  Large light grey rucksacks add to the adventurous holiday theme. The overall look is clean and you can’t help wonder whether this collection is more suited to a luxury holiday in the Caribbean rather than trekking in Nepal or on a dusty African safari.

J.W. ANDERSON

Titled ‘the Devoured and I’, the collection looks at the intimacy and journey of 2 people as they experiment and get lost in self discovery and subsequently the fall out and consequences of this.

Layering is key with waistcoats, shirts over tees, and knits wrapped round the waist, but the silhouette is slim and not baggy. Colours range from the muted earthy tones to burnt oranges, blues, pinks and black.

Grandmas may have to lock up their doilies as hand crocheted ones make an appearance here giving texture to tee shirts and knits. Admittedly not all are the basic white as some are dip dyed with neon colours to represent hallucinations. Also adding texture and a bit of bling are Swarovski crystals embellishing tops and boots. Patterns galore on rolled up chinos and digital prints of William Gedney the photographer grace the backs of tops.

The show ended this journey with a Pulp soundtrack and a wide laser beam display above the catwalk resembling a dense clouded sky.

And it is also the end of my LFW journey, next stop London Fashion Weekend.

2011 Shirts

Create an eye-catching and appealing statement in 2011 with the latest fashion trends coming up this season. Diamond studded tank watches, rainbow bright bib necklaces, sleek and sexy headbands, embossed carry-all bags and peep-toe booties are the must-haves in 2011. But these fashion accessories are simply bland without the latest and trendy outfits. So move out and get your wardrobe adapted to different trends that designers create season after season. While some become outdated after a short duration, others prefer to lay there in rows for more seasons. For 2011, you will have a beautiful array of shirt collection to complement your trousers and accessories with. Play with masculine-feminine combinations to sport the next season’s most wearable fashion shirts. Check out the various hot and chic shirt trends for 2011.

2011 Shirt Fashion Trends

Go For White
Versatile and classic, a white shirt is known for its elegance and simplicity. Pair it up with a skirt or a pair of trousers, to match up with every occasion, right from a formal business meeting to a special evening event. Try out the classic white shirts with traditional cuffs and collars, or go for one with ruffles and ribbons. Accessorize them with flat oxfords, straw hats and oversize shades for a casual look. For that oomph-creating formal look, girls can put on a necklace or a brooch, while boys have tie, vest or blazer as an option.

Floral Prints
The summer floral prints not only embellish landscapes, but beautify dresses, skirts, shirts, blouses, pants, and shoes as well. For that perfect bohemian romantic look, try out shirts in various floral prints reflecting femininity. Flaunt a cool summer look with a feminine floral printed shirt, coupling it with boyfriend jeans or black leggings. You can also match your favorite floral shirt with skinny jeans, wide belt and lots of accessories for a cool yet hot retro look.

Ruffles
Ruffles have been in fashion for quite some season and would continue to do so throughout 2011 as well. Delicate and purely feminine, ruffled shirts can best be sported by women with a less generous chest. Conversely, avoid them if you have a bigger chest. Pair them with straight-cut jeans and pants to balance off the look. Try matching one of your ruffled shirts with pencil-skirts. A sure-shot way to turn heads!

Denim
You can expect to find lots of denim shirts in various styles and designs across all stores in 2011. They can be worn in different combinations for different occasions and hence, will serve as one of the hottest trends for the coming season. Either roll up the sleeves of your denim shirt or leave it unbuttoned with a contrasting top underneath. If you wish to go all-denim, choose a shirt in a lighter shade paired with dark-colored jeans. Put on a wide belt, slip into a pair of gladiator sandals, hang a brown satchel bag, and you are ready to move outdoors flaunting your new style. For a more feminine look, team up your denim shirt with a floral skirt, a floral dress, or a pair of nude short. Complete the look with a pair of cowboy boots, clogs or platform sandals. Accessorize with a silk scarf or a Panama hat.

Spring/Summer 2011 Lingerie Trends

Posted: Mar 23, 2011 |Comments: 0

Fashion within the celebrity world is probably what you would call â??out there’, by this I mean the likes of Madonna, Lady  Gaga and Beyonce running around in skimpy underwear, on and off stage! As far as designer fashion goes, lately there is a major influx of models parading down the catwalk wearing quite clearly lingerie as outwear.  Designers are using more delicate lingerie inspired fabrics such as lace, chiffon and silk; all lead back to traditional lingerie. Other designers use certain types of lingerie and team it with outer garments, such as a lace bra top and palazzo pants.

Wearing lingerie as outerwear, or with outerwear can not only look fashionable but also extremely sexy! So if it’s a night out you are going on don’t be afraid to wear sheer garments and show some sexy black lingerie.  You can also get away with lingerie in daytime as long as it’s subtle, you must remember your look needs to be very demur in order for it to be pulled off.  You must be sure that the rest of your outfit is well balanced and nothing too raunchy or revealing.

Chiffon and sheer

This season is all about being revealing, and a little bit naughty; at Self Temptation this is our favourite look, dare to bare! We have some great tips on how to follow this sexy trend but still remain totally classy and chic. The trick is to layer, wear something sheer and only reveal a small part of the lingerie you want to show off, this will often have the â??less is more’ affect on your look.

When you think of chiffon, we automatically think of what can be worn underneath the garment to make sure it’s not too revealing. There are great ways to wear chiffon and sheer fabric without revealing all, make sure the lingerie that you wear you feel comfortable and good in. A good example is a sheer or lace top with a lacey cami underneath, or a padded bra with complete coverage. The last thing you want is to project a â??trying too hard’ look, but still showing your gorgeous lingerie.

This style also applies to leg wear too. Don’t be afraid of wearing stockings or sexy leg wear instead of opaque tights. This can be a great way of using lingerie as outerwear; if you feel uncomfortable showing off your bra, show your legs instead. Classic stockings with an iconic seam up the back leg worn with a black shift dress will look incredibly chic.

Ruffles

Lace and ruffle lingerie look great underneath a chiffon or sheer garment. A lacey top with a sheer jacket or blouse always looks stunning when paired together because it’s classic, but also adds a twist to your look.

Ruffle accessories are a great way to complement an outfit, they make a statement and show femininity. Coloured beads and a subtle use of feathers or fur create a glamorous look that also works really well with ruffle accessories.

Ruffles, satin and lace can all make us feel pretty and feminine, which is exactly what is in for Sping/Summer 2011.

How to choose your clothing style?

Posted: Dec 20, 2010 |Comments: 0

In order to be stylish and fashion able does not need to blindly follow fashion http://www.flanmark.com, just click on your clothing style that will blend harmoniously with your way. There are many styles of clothing, many of them, dwell on those that are more popular.

Classic. In this style there is accuracy and simplicity. There are no frills in clothes, frills, this style is elegant. A variation of the classic style is business-like style. Created it for the office and its motto is rationality and rigor. The main elements of a wardrobe – pants and skirts are straight cut, close-fitting jackets. The business style is not flounces, ruffles and bell-bottoms. The length of skirts should be knee-deep, and even better below the knee on the palm. The combination of black and white, throughout the conservatism of parts to the silhouette.

Style of folk or country music.
This style is quiet and free tunics, dresses, wide-cut long skirt and blouse, skirt, free knitting sweaters and cardigans. Only natural fabrics, colors – pastel only muted shades – brown, beige, green. Popular lace, fringe, lace trim and beading, embroidery and applique.

Of the shoe fit sandals with a strap, a simple low-heeled shoes, wooden clogs;
of the ornaments of beads fit fine on a long thread, filament Baubles and large wooden earrings.

Sporty.
Clothing bright enough, at least finishes. For such a free-style silhouette is typical. Fabrics are used such as blended knitted elastic. Those who dress in sporty wear, tank tops, shorts, bermudas, leggings, t-shirts polo shirts. From shoes prefer thick shoes with laces, open low-heeled shoes with stitching and tassels. Love wearing backpacks, shoulder bags, duffel bags.

Romantic style.
Romantic style – the best, traditional and at the same time very feminine. From fabrics – chiffon, silk, satin, velvet and muslin pastel shades, polka dot with floral pattern. Characterized by complex cut, most importantly not to overdo it with ruffles, flounces, yoke, ruffles. Long flared skirt, a handbag should be small, low-heeled shoes and an essential complement to a scarf or neckerchief of a translucent light fabric.

Romance is present in the modern fashion FLANMARK.com in the form of underwear style. Evening dresses are reminiscent of expensive lacy negligees and do not go for several years with the fashion catwalks. “Linen” blouse of transparent chiffon and lace is quite acceptable to wear to work, but, of course, complete with a jacket.

A large imprint on the style of clothing imposes a way of life, if you’re in the warehouse of his nature an active person who loves sports, in your wardrobe are things sporty prevail, and hairpins, feminine clothes will be kept to a minimum, most likely in these clothes you just uncomfortable.

Sentimental and romantic person, who prefers to spend free time at home with your family will feel comfortable with yourself in the romantic style dress. Girl such things sporty style will seem dull and rough.

Much in the style of their own choice depends on the shape. If you are slim, fit and proportionally composed of, in many outfits can afford. And if the figure is far from perfect, it is necessary to know that you are going and what not to wear.

We should choose their clothing FLANMARK.com so that it is a tribute to the masked figures and disadvantages of the maximum.

Try to select clothes for your image, not a way to pick a dress and then you will be unique.

Fashionable Spring Additions For Your Clothing Wardrobe

Posted: Feb 15, 2011 |Comments: 0
|

Clothing trends come and go so quickly these days that it’s not always a good idea to invest in them, you simply won’t get the wear out of them and they won’t be worth their money. But there are certain items of clothing from trends that will be useful to add to your wardrobe and can easily be incorporated into other looks.

Stripes

The nautical look and stripes have been around for a few years now and seem to make an appearance every year for spring and summer so feel free to add plenty of these pieces to your wardrobe, but this year they’ve come back with a contemporary touch with angled stripes being the look to be seen in. This is quite a harsh look so team it with something plain otherwise you’ll loose the effect.

Prints

Fuller figure women will be pleased to hear that prints are back in for spring 2011; they’re great for larger woman because they hide those womanly lumps and bumps and when used cleverly they can make you appear slimmer. Butterfly, animal, kitsch, tropical prints are just a few that you’ll see on the high street this year, but as with angles stripes always wear prints with something plain and highlight a colour, otherwise you’ll take away from the pretty print. Don’t add too many prints to your wardrobe though, they’ll go out of fashion quite quickly, although animal prints always seem to be in so you’re safe to splurge a little there.

Colours

We might not be there yet but glimpses of summer trends are making their way into the spring fashions with vibrant shades like acid yellow and tangerine being must haves this season, which ties in great with tropical prints trend as seen above. And what’s more is that colour blocking is big too; so don’t be afraid to experiment with colour this spring. Bold colours are always great to have in your wardrobe, you can wear them in the summer and holiday so easily, but one piece can also brighten up an outfit instantly.

Pleats

Another trend that’s not worth investing in too much; pleats seem to be everywhere this season but as they’re a trend they might not be around for long. Pleats can also be difficult to wear as they emphasise particular body areas and if worn wrong they can make you look larger than you actually are. But pleats are also a really nice feminine look, especially a pleated skirt, but if you prefer understated why not go for something with low-key pleats instead?

Lace

You probably saw lots of lace on the high street back in autumn 2010 and it looks set to continue right through 2011 as well. The beauty about lace is that it’s so easy to wear, a lace dress or top will really add a feminine and fashionable touch to your look instantly. But remember to wear something underneath if it isn’t lined!

Ruffles

Another feminine trend that looks set to be big, ruffles first hit the catwalks for the party season in winter 2010. When wearing ruffles think about you’ll wear them, they instantly add volume to an area, so if you have a full bust avoid an overly ruffled neckline and if you carry your weight on your waist avoid ruffles there. But you can also work that to your advantage by using ruffles to draw the eye away from those areas you’d rather keep covered up.

Chiffon

So it might not be a new thing but chiffon has certainly hit the catwalks this spring and as it’s such a beautiful and timeless fabric it’ll make a great addition to your wardrobe. Go for chiffon blouses or chiffon day dresses; they’re so easy to wear and you’ll find them ideal for lots of different occasions too. Chiffon works well with the lace and ruffles trends above too!

Blouses and shirts

The tailored style will make another appearance this year and it’s a really versatile one so will make a great addition to your wardrobe, so don’t worry about splurging a little in this area. Simple crisp shirts are ideal for an understated look, while a blouse teamed with the ruffles, lace or chiffon trends above will be easy to take from day to night with a feminine touch.

Hot Styles and Trends for Winter

Saturday, May 21st, 2011

Every season of every year there are some hot new styles and cuts with updates and variations of the old. You can never really be out of fashion! If your style is on the forefront of cutting edge fashion or you prefer the traditional classics, don’t let the cold get in your way!

Boho Chic – This trend is not for everyone because it tends to feature lots of busy prints, short skirts, and other pieces that require a more petite body to really pull it off. Team up a tunic with long leggings but make sure the tunic drapes well; To complete the look add a draped coat, shrug or shawl. Opt for animal prints in all different colour shades for your short skirts and be sure to invest in a good pair of thigh boots to protect your legs while still looking great.

Rock Chick – This trend builds on the many big shoulder looks being shown this year. Try combining a jacket with big, pointed, shaped shoulders with slim pants and a tunic; whenever possible, opt for leather, metallic fabrics, and lots of grey and black shades. If you can work in a studded hip slung belt it will really make the outfit catch everyone’s eye!

Classic – Although the word is overused, classic styles are always elegent and in fashion. Wear knee-length skirts which are slightly tapered with a white shirt or ruffled blouse in a strong colour for maximum effect. Curvey is really ”in” this year so look for combinations that define your waistline. To finish the look add a trench-style coat or military jacket for that stylised and polished look.

Cool Urban – A great style for casual evenings or for the carrer women who dont have to wear power suits into the office every day. Try teaming up skinny jeans or leggings with sexy little ankle boots and a checked shirt, or knitted dress for a great look. A long jacket in soft, swinging fabrics completes this look, creating an effect that makes your legs look longer and your overall silhouette look cutting-edge and fantastic.

If you’re not sure which look is best for you this winter, head to your local department store with a couple of friends and spend an afternoon trying them all on to see how they work for you. It’s guaranteed to be fun for all of you!
