Top 20 Most Asked Questions About Sunglasses

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Do I really need to wear sunglasses? Yes. Not only are they fashionable, but they protect your eyes from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Ultraviolet light is invisible to the eyes, but over time can cause cataracts, macular degeneration and even permanent blindness. In other words, UV is bad for your health. In the same way that sunscreen protects your skin, sunglasses are the best way to protect your eyes. Remember, UV rays penetrate even on cloudy days!

What different materials are sunglasses made from? Most high end sunglasses are made from nylon, metal, or plastic. Nylon frames are a popular choice, as they have an extremely high bending strength, low density and a resistance to UV damage. This makes the frames shatter-resistant, lightweight and durable. Most metal framed sunglasses are made from some type of metal alloy. Metal frames are extremely rigid, and are generally not used for sports related activities. Basic plastic frames tend to be found on low-end sunglasses, as they are not very durable.

What type of frame should I choose? Let’s take a look at the three most common styles: full frame, half frame, and frameless. Depending on your particular use, each frame can have a different purpose. Full frame sunglasses completely surround the lens and are the basic choice in both fashion and sport sunglasses. Half frame sunglasses surround half of the lens and are ideal for many sports and outdoor activities, as they typically weigh less and offer interchangeable lens options. Frameless sunglasses are the most uncommon style, because the hinge and earpieces are attached directly to the lenses. If you want to stay light, frameless is the best option.

What is the best lens material and what are the main differences? There are three basic lens materials: plastic, polycarbonate, and glass. Plastic lenses are lightweight, tint easily, and are more shatter resistant than glass lenses. Plastic lenses do tend to be thicker than polycarbonate lenses, and usually require special scratch-resistant and UV coatings. Polycarbonate lenses are very lightweight, block 100% of UV rays naturally, and are 10 times more impact resistant than regular plastic or glass lenses. This makes polycarbonate lenses one of the most popular choices. Glass lenses are the most expensive option because they offer superior optical clarity and exceptional scratch resistance, however glass lenses are a bit heavier than plastic or polycarbonate lenses.

What types of lens coatings are available? Coatings can include mirror, anti-reflective, scratch-resistant, and UV. A mirror coating is applied to the front surface of the lens to reflect light, thereby reducing the amount of light actually passing through the lens. Mirror coatings are not transparent, which many prefer. Anti-reflective coatings eliminate lens reflections from the back of the lens, reducing distracting glares that would otherwise interfere with normal vision. Anti-reflective coatings are generally a good idea on any type of lens material, but can be particularly useful on polycarbonate lenses, as they tend to reflect more light. Scratch-resistant coatings protect soft surfaces (such as plastic and polycarbonate) from deep gouges and surface marks. This coating typically increases the lifetime of a set of lenses. Because of their density, glass lenses do not require a scratch-resistant coating.

Does the color of my lens matter? The color of a lens can be as important as the material a pair of sunglasses is made from. Grey, yellow, clear and brown are typically the colors that will minimize distortion. Grey lenses are considered neutral because they enhance bright colors. It is also the most popular lens color for everyday use. Yellow and clear lenses are often used for sports related activities, as well as protective sunglasses. Brown lenses can cause some color distortion, but have contrast-limiting properties.

What is a photochromic lens? Photochromic lenses, also known as transition lenses, automatically adjust to lighting conditions. They darken with exposure to UV and once the UV is removed the lenses will gradually return to their clear state. You can find photochromic lenses in glass, plastic, and polycarbonate varieties.

What is a polarized lens, and are they worth the extra money? Polarized lenses are well known for reducing glare and improving optical clarity. Polarized sunglass lenses have a special filter within the lens that blocks glare, an especially important feature for water-sports, boating, and fishing. Essentially, polarized shades act like slatted window blinds. When light reflects off a surface, the slatted blinds stop the reflected light from reaching your eye while still letting all the ambient light in. In the end, you’ll see more clearly and stave off eye fatigue. So why are they more expensive? The polarization process adds an extra step to the manufacturing process, not to mention the research and development behind a polarized lens. They are more expensive, but your eyes will thank you.

What is lens curvature? Lens curvature refers to the amount of arc in the lens. It is often represented using two numbers, such as 12 x 4.5. The first number (12) would be the horizontal arc (also called the base). A 6 base lens has a more flat, square shape creating a more scholarly look. You will find many 6 base lenses in fashion sunglasses. A larger base like a 9 base is more wrapped and therefore will appear more suited for active endeavors. The second number (4.5) refers to the vertical arc in the lens. 4.5 means it’s slightly rounded from top to bottom.

Should I worry about the hinge type? Probably not. Most hinges are made from stainless steel or a water resistant metal alloy to prevent rusting. Many of the hinges found on sunglasses are barrel hinges, which are formed out of interlocking pieces and held together with a single screw. They are inexpensive, durable, and functional.Spring hinges use spring tension to press the temples of the frame closer to the sides of your head. This allows for a closer, more customized fit, but also means they are more expensive.

What is the most popular lens and frame color? The combination of a grey lens encompassed by a shiny black frame is the most popular option. We expect this to be our best seller for years to come.

How should I keep my sunglasses clean? They best way to keep your sunglasses clean is to store them in a protective case when not in use. This will also keep your lenses from getting scratched. Because your shades will eventually collect dirt and dust, use a soft cloth and warm soapy water when those spots become unbearable (or when you can no longer see through them). Many sunglasses come with a micro-fiber bag which is perfect for cleaning on the go.

What should I do if my lenses start peeling or my frames show wear? Sunglasses may start to deteriorate for a couple reasons. It’s usually either a manufacturers defect or due to user abuse. Manufacturers warranties do not cover normal wear and tear, but in the event of a defect they have exceptional warranty departments. If you have not taken good care of your sunglasses, you will likely find it difficult to get them replaced from the manufacturer. You can however get it fixed for a small fee.

Why are some sunglasses so much more expensive than others? There is no right or wrong answer to this question, however we believe that the main factors that determine price are a sunglasses materials, coatings, brand power, and construction. Many people believe that purchasing high-end sunglasses simply means paying for a designer name. This is not the case. Inexpensive sunglasses may not give you 100% UV protection. Every manufacturer claims to make the best sunglasses on earth, but for the most part you will get what you pay for. Polarization is more expensive than a non-polarized lens. Titanium frames cost much more than nylon frames. Many customers are loyal to one brand over another and will pay extra for the “cool factor”. That’s brand power. When you start adding these factors together, it does not take long for a pair of sunglasses to cost 0.

Is it best to purchase sunglasses that are made in Italy? What about China? 20 years ago, we might have told you that any sunglass not made in Italy is either cheap or fake. This is just not the case today. China has delicately refined their manufacturing processes over the last several years and is now producing exceptional sunglasses. Some major sunglass brands have started to transition their entire product lines to China, in an effort to reduce costs and improve efficiency. Some have even said that the quality of China made sunglasses outperforms those made in Italy. Either way, you simply cannot go wrong with either type.

How do I know what sunglasses fit my face? Here are some basic tips. If you have a square face, look for sunglasses that have a slight curve to them. This will help to downplay a strong jaw line. Those with a round face should buy sunglasses that have straight or angular lines. This will accentuate your features. If you have a triangular shaped face, look for something with thin lines that wont sit high on your face. Those with an oblong face tend to look good in most sunglasses, as long as the size of the frames is proportionate with your head. Ultimately, the decision is up to you. If you like them, wear them! Our secret tip: if you love them, buy two more. There is nothing worse than breaking or losing your favorite pair of sunglasses only to find out that they are no longer in production. If you find a pair you cant live without, buy two or three for the future. You’ll thank us.

Do my children need to wear sunglasses? Absolutely. In fact, most kids are out in the sun more often than adults and since their eyes are still in the developmental stage, it is extremely important to keep your kids in sunglasses. UV damage happens over time, so the sooner you can protect their eyes, the healthier they will be down the road.

Are sunglasses regulated in any way? Believe it or not, sunglasses are classified as a medical device by the FDA and are the most widely purchased over-the-counter ophthalmic devices that the FDA regulates. As such, any company that manufacturers sunglasses must follow strict regulations. All lenses must be impact resistant and frames must be non-flammable.

What you need to know about Sunglasses

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

Sunglasses make a huge fashion statement today, but sunglasses are not all about just fashion.  Sunglasses protect your eyes from harmful UVA & UVB rays preventing macular degeneration.  Macular degeneration is a condition that results in a loss of vision due to damage to the retina.  Macular degeneration makes it difficult to read or to recognize faces.  Ways to prevent macular degeneration include the following:

TIPS

1.  Wear Sunglasses that offer 100% UVA & UVB Protection

2.  Wear wrap around sunglasses or bigger style sunglasses to block UV rays from all directions.

3.  When purchasing sunglasses look for a tag or a sticker on the glasses stating the lenses are   100% UVA & UVB Protected.

4.  Be sure to purchase sunglasses for your children and get them use to wearing sunglasses at a very young age.

5.  There is absolutely no point in buying sunglasses, I can assure you they will not be UV protected and will serve only as an accessory to your daily outfit.

STYLES

Different activities require different styles of sunglasses.  If you are looking for something for athletic activities you want to find sport sunglasses with rubber nose pieces and rubber ends on the stems.  This will prevent slippage even if you are sweaty and/or vigorously moving about.

If you drive a lot or are planning to be around water fishing or boating, polarized sunglasses are what you need.  Polarized Sunglasses reduce the glare from water and wet surfaces such as roads and windshields.  Light reflected off of wet surfaces is horizontally polarized as opposed to scattered which creates a much more annoying band of light that is extremely bright making it hard to see.

If you are looking for riding sunglasses you have a few choices.  You can buy sunglasses with foam inside the frame which prevents debris, bugs and wind from affecting your eyesight.  These are referred to as foamerz.  You can also choose to wear wrap around sunglasses with big lenses or riding goggles with or without interchangeable lenses or photochromic lenses.  Interchangeable lens kits include clear, yellow and charcoal.  These can be used from morning to night riding by simply changing the lenses as the sunlight permits.  If you do not like the idea of having to stop to change the lens you can opt for the photochromic lenses which change colors as the sunlight changes from morning to night without any work on your part.  These type of sunglasses are also referred to as transitional sunglasses.

Last but not least, if you are looking for just casual everyday sunglasses, there are plenty of options to choose from and they too should have lenses that are 100% UVA & UVB protection.

SHAPES

There are basically five different face shapes and listed below are the typical styles that fit these shapes.

Round faces have the most curves therefore the sunglasses should have minimum curves with narrow frames and/or a wrap around frame.  The newer retro sunglasses fit round faces because the placement of the temples is higher than a lot of the latest styles today.

If you have more of a square face you should opt for curvier sunglasses such as a round or oval style.  This will help compliment the square jawline.  For men, since they do not usually wear sunglasses with curves, they should opt for sunglasses with more of an angle to help compliment the square jawline.

If you have more of the oblong face you should opt for oversized sunglasses.  The oblong face is generally wider than the normal face so you should look for wider frames as well.

If you have a wide forehead but a narrow chin you are considered to have a triangular face.  You should look for sunglasses that have rounded edges.  Wrap around frames and smaller frames are a great fit for those with triangular faces.

The oval face is the best face to have!  Oval faces can literally wear just about any style they prefer to wear.  There are no hidden rules, if you like it, wear it!

LENSES

Charcoal lenses are the more popular color choice in everyday sunglasses.  Charcoal lenses reduce glare, dims sunlight and do not change the color perception of other colors.

Yellow lenses enhance depth perception, but they also distort color perception.  Yellow lenses help to sharpen your view and are especially great for motorcycle riding and/or driving in the rain.

Green lenses help to filter out some of the blue light and are great for contrast.  Green lenses do not distort other colors and absorb UV rays. Brown/amber lenses are great for driving in fog because they reduce the blue light making your surroundings less hazy .

Brown lenses reduce glare and increase depth perception.  Brown lenses do distort colors, but not near as much as yellow lenses.

Rose lenses improve contrast against blue or green backgrounds and filter light effectively.

If you follow these tips you should have no problem finding sunglasses that will not only fit your personality and style, but also protect your eyes, making you happy and comfortable while enjoying the outdoors.

Some Secrets about Photochromic Prescription Sunglasses

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Photochromic sunglass is made of photochromic glass of which the color will change automatically under the radiation of the light with proper wavelength and then return to normal when the light resource is moved away. Nowadays, more and more people prefer photochromic prescription sunglasses instead of the ordinary prescription sunglasses as they can protect the eyes better.

Why the color of the photochromic sunglass is changed is due to the UV ray, but not the sunlight. So it is not suggested for the driver to wear photochromic sunglasses as the UV ray is clocked by the car window when you are sitting in the car and the color is unlikely to be changed. In addition, whether the photochomic sunglass can resist the UV ray depends on the material of the lens, and this does nothing to do with the lens color. As you know, many common lenses are also 100% UV ray resistant.

It is true that the photochromic sunglasses of good quality can protect your eyes. However, for those photochromic sunglasses that are of poor quality, you should avoid wearing them. Because your eyes will lose self-protection and will not narrow the pupils in case of light if the lens color is too dark. For this reason, if the lenses are unable to resist UV ray, more UV rays will enter the pupils, causing cataracta.

Therefore, quality should be the primary factor that you must consider when you are purchasing photochromic prescription sunglasses. In view of that most of the high-quality photochromic sunglasses available in your local shops pro are expensive, I suggest you to buy them from the online stores. www.firmoo.com should be a good choice since they provide varieties of glasses of good quality and with reasonable prices. I am sure you will get a desirable photochromic sunglass from them.

What’s so special about Cashmere?

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

The natural goat fibers from the goats of Kashmir have for centuries yielded the softest, most luxuriant garments in the world. The tight weave of these silky wools lends a light, easy flow to cashmere cape, coats, sweaters, and shawls.

But is the only place you find cashmere wool coat from Kashmir? Not at all, although the origins of the word came from the Kashmir area from the Persian times, we are fortunate that many other locations are now producing cashmere. One in particular is in Inner Mongolia, northern China.  This area is the biggest producer of cashmere goats in the wool.  Other places like Tibet, New Zealand and Turkey have significant productions. The key factor in producing quality cashmere is the weather. The colder the climate, the thicker the goatâ??s wool will be. Therefore, it is not a surprise that good quality cashmere wool comes from cold climate countries.

According to the U.S. Wool Products Labeling Act of 1939 of the United States, as amended, (U.S.C. 15 Section 68b(a)(6)), a textile product may not be labeled as containing cashmere if:

1) Such wool product is not the fine (de-haired) undercoat fibers produced by a cashmere goat;

2) The average diameter of the fiber of such wool product exceeds 19 microns; or

3) Such wool product contains more than 3 percent (by weight) of cashmere fibers with average diameters that exceed 30 microns.

Anyone who has ever bought and worn a quality cashmere cape swears how comfortable and warm it is.  Unlike the common wool, cashmere is soft and does not itch when wearing it. Plus, it has the ability to be woven into fine threads or thick yarns lend a great deal of flexibility to designs when crafting garments of cashmere. Coats in this natural fiber, consequently, appear in a surprising variety of patterns, textures, colors and designs. However be careful when purchasing your cashmere cape or shawl, there are a lot of cashmere imitations on the market. Since cashmere textile is naturally expensive, the coats or garments are also expensive. One technique many manufacturers will use to reduce the cost is blending the cashmere wool with a lower quality. Unfortunately, this also reduces the quality and characteristic to popular with cashmere.

What You Need to Know About Men's Skin Care

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Irrespective of your gender, your face is the main part of your body that requires the most grooming. It is our face that people see first. Men’s skin care has grown to be a vital part of the men’s daily lives today. Quite a few brands cater specifically to men and they offer a wide range of men’s facial care products. These products are designed exclusively for men and include men’s shave cream, men’s face wash and men’s lip balm.

The first men’s skin care product a man should buy is a good face wash. Fean and Companys’ EverClear Facial Cleanser is an alpha hydroxy face wash. Feans’ Facial Cleanser formula includes three alpha hydroxyl acids; lactic acid from (vegan) milk, malic acid from apples and glycolic acid from sugar cane which help remove dirt and extra oils from the skin . This men’s face wash prepares your skin for the use of a men’s shave cream by making the surface of your skin smooth. It cleanses your skin deeply and removes the dirt as well as dead skin cells so that your shave is less irritating. Since your razor can get closer to your skin the probability of razor burn is much lower. Using a men’s face wash on a regular basis also puts an end to in-grown hairs by opening pores that may have been congested.

The next thing that should be a part of your men’s skin care routine is a men’s shave cream. A good men’s shave cream will have hydrating micro particles that safeguard the skin against razor burn. They get rid of the possibility of ingrown hairs and nourish the skin with the help of Vitamin A and Vitamin E. Some have Aloe Vera and Eucalyptus to give you that close and comfortable shave, a perfect blend that protects you from cuts and nicks. Other shaving creams rob your skin of its natural oils leaving it dry and sore. For best results you should shave with Fean and Co’s Microbeard directly after a warm shower, or simply use warm water on your face. This will help soften stubble, which makes shaving easier.

Besides the men’s shave cream, another men’s skin care product to consider is lip balm SPF 30. Fean and Company offers the highest quality lip balm available. Supplemented with superior quality antioxidants and skin conditioners, this balm is the perfect solution for soothing dry and chapped lips. Unlike waxy sticks, this type of balm is quick to penetrate and give relief instantly. It provides broad spectrum sun protection with an SPF of 30 and guards against extreme temperature. It is dermatologist tested and free from colorants. It also contains natural mint to help freshen the breath.

All About Holistic Skin Care For Women

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Most women want to look their best and are concerned about their skin. The skin is the body’s largest organ. It is also what people see first about a person. Beautiful skin is also a reflection of health. It makes you appear radiant and feel good from the inside out.

But you don’t have to spend a lot of money to make your skin look perfect. A flawless, glowing complexion can be achieved by following the practices of holistic skin care for most women. Here are some tips:

1. Eat right.

Everything starts from within. Perfect skin will only be evident if you eat the right types of food. Keep away from fatty foods, cholesterol-laden foods, sweets, and carcinogens. You also have to reduce salt and alcohol intake. Anything that’s fresh, light, and nutritious is essential for healthy skin.

2. Take vitamins.

Your skin needs nutrition. And the best way to get it is to make sure that you take vitamin supplements daily. While you can rely on food to get all the nutrients that your skin needs, you will be able to boost the radiant effect if you have adequate amounts of Vitamins A, C, and E. Other vitamins and minerals are essential as well.

3. Stay away from the sun.

An ounce of prevention is always better than a pound of cure. Don’t subject your skin to torture. The sun’s UV rays are the ones most harmful to it. You are going to need the sun to have adequate Vitamin D in your body. It is best that you get your skin’s dose of the sun very early in the day. At 10 am to noon, the sun is at its most dangerous. Never go out and expose your skin to it during such hours.

4. Don’t use products containing harmful substances.

If you have to use skin care regimens, make sure that you use products that don’t have artificial preservatives, chemicals, fragrances, paraffin, petrochemicals, petrolatum, alcohol, and ethylene oxide in them. With prolonged use, all of these may harm your skin. They may cause allergies and irritations as well. Worse, they would increase your risks of acquiring cancer.

5. Drink up.

You want your skin moisturized because dry skin is not healthy. So always make sure that you don’t get dehydrated. Drink as much water and fluids as you can throughout the day. Water also helps in the detoxification process. It can flush out the harmful elements inside your body, which may eventually cause problems from within. Fruit juices and vegetable shakes are most advisable, on top of your regular eight glasses of water a day. You should also make sure that you stay away from sodas, alcohol, and caffeinated drinks which lack any good health values.

These holistic skin care regimens can definitely make your skin glow with beauty naturally. Follow them regularly and you’ll be on your way to achieving healthy skin.
